Last post of 2011 with the last pictures from this year. I met Donna (also known as Bad Lay-Dee; check out a recent ska project she's a part of @ Soundcloud ) a few month ago in a pub in East London and she happened to be looking for someone to do a shoot for her. On one beautiful November afternoon we wandered the streets of Hoxton taking pictures. These are just a couple of my favourite photographs from the shoot:

A couple of weeks ago I was invited to document one of the initial events for the KX True Skills campaign that is fully launching in 2012. The project is providing young people with an opportunity to try and learn new hobbies, such as capoeira, boxing, street dancing and street illustration/graffiti. I thought it was a great idea so last Saturday I packed my gear and caught a train to Chelmsford, where the third KX True Skills event was taking place.
The Chelmsford event included music, boxing, street dancing and street illustration workshops all led by experienced mentors. It was rather inspiring seeing participants (who surprisingly were mostly boys) so engaged into activities that they seemed to barely notice a fair number of cameras pointed at them. I think my favourite part was street dancing workshop as it really brought people together and looked like a lot of fun (to be perfectly honest, it made me wish I could just join in and dance instead of taking pictures!) I believe that this kind of events, encouraging young people to get involved into sports, music, arts and other activities, are extremely valuable and I hope the KX True Skills project will continue inspiring the youth on even bigger scale. Now onto the pictures!..

Last month I was lucky enough to take behind the scenes photos of The First Fleet recording their EP on a boat. No, your eyes aren't lying, I really said boat. The EP 'Clean' was recorded in a studio on an actual ship, LightShip95. It was an interesting eye-opening experience; made me realize just how much hard work and effort it takes to record an album, especially when you have to do a few months worth of work in only a week. Being around this bunch of amazingly talented, beautiful and friendly individuals so passionate about what they're doing was also truly inspiring. Heaps fun and heaps of pictures at the end of the day... After what was probably the longest time it ever took me to edit a shoot, I'm finally sharing it with you guys.

The degree is over and I'm almost a photographer with a BA diploma now (HIRE ME!?); enjoying my well deserved rest at home. Berries, sun, football with my little brother, cats, dogs, more sun, ice cream and milkshakes and a tiny bit of work when I get tired of resting. Life is sweet.

I was supposed to post this update 5 days ago. This week was supposed to be a week of chilling and not doing much since our exhibition is finally up and the degree is over (still find it hard to believe it). Yet it seems that these busy days aren't leaving my life anytime soon, which is a good thing (except for the lack of sleep).

I'm manning our exhibition at Lee Rosy's as I'm typing this. It's been on since Monday and is running till the 3rd of June, so if you're in/around Nottingham, you're very welcome to pop by and have a look at our photographs/portfolios.

I (probably just like most of other photographers) have a thing for mirror pictures. I believe I have billions of them resting on my hard drive. I rarely ever post them anywhere though so I thought I'll do that now as the dissertation took over my life and I don't have much time for anything else including photography... Pictures taken a year ago. On one of those days when I was feeling just a stranger in a foreign land missing her home. Eventually, this kind of days became rarer and the feeling transformed into something else. I can't put that in words yet. I just know that right now I'm typing all this at the place I used to (and still) call home and the feeling I get is similar to the one I used to get a year ago while being away from home. Only a little milder.

A couple of weeks ago I shot a collection called Revealing & healing created by a young talented designer Hee Won Park. Despite some technical difficulties and stress caused by them we had a lot of fun organizing and doing this photoshoot and I'm happy to finally be able to share the results with you guys! On Monday I had the last crit this year, today I handed in my dissertation proposal and even though I dread to think about next year's joys it just feels so right. Scary but righttt!

So this Monday we finally finished probably the biggest uni project of this academic year -- the exhibition. One word: joy joy joy! The private view was a great success and I don't remember when was the last time I felt THIS ecstatic about anything. I'm so proud of our group and so happy everything went well! Also I want to thank everyone who came to the opening night and who helped me out with this project (and yes I still remember I owe a chocolate cake to some of you!), you guys rock!

Statement and preview of something I've been working on for the past two months:

Eyes Shut is a series of photographic portraits exploring the emotional state of a person when his or her eyes are closed. Sixteen people were photographed to reflect this very intimate condition and discover repetitive notions of vulnerability, calmness and fragility.

UPDATE: Exhibition.

The past two months have been pretty intense; the last week was both psychologically and physically challenging. I'm lying in my bed with my whole body aching (apparently mounting of big prints is very much physical kind of work, especially for little delicate people like me :P) and feeling a weird mix of exhaustion, relief and fulfillment as I'm typing all this.

We had to put up an exhibition + do a project we would then display in that exhibition in two months. Obviously it's a hell lot of work for such a short period of time but we managed to do it, in fact, I think we did really well.
Today prints finally went on the walls (after shitloads of bad luck with printing company etc) and I must say, this is the best kind of feeling. After all the hard work, all the bad luck and little errors, seeing your very own photographs on the gallery wall is so incredibly fulfilling! These are the moments I know for sure I'm on the right track. Tired yet very happy; enjoying well deserved free half of the day finally being able to do nothing at all yet looking forward to doing more work. Weird thing, as much as I love sleep (I believe I could sleep 16 hours a day if I had nothing to do), I feel much better when I don't get enough sleep. Analogically, as much as I love doing nothing, I'm happiest busy. I guess sometimes all sort of lacks we usually consider a bad thing are only for the better cos at the end of the day a deficiency of one good thing is often an excess of another. In this case, my lack of sleep and social life was completely forgotten and replaced by pure joy the moment photographs hung on the wall.

Instead of retouching new photographs for my new project which is going to hang on the gallery wall in 4 weeks (!) time I'm working on last year pictures.. Avoiding work by doing other (unnecessary) work seems like the best option! Anyway, those gazillions photographs of Lina resting on my hard drive won't leave me alone.. Plus it's always much more fun to do things you don't really need to do. Period.

Was working on my website a bit for the last couple of days and editing old pictures from to be edited folder that sits on my desktop and keeps trying to make me feel guilty for paying no attention to it. So yeah eventually I felt the guilt and since I'm updating the website decided it's a perfect time to have some random photoshop fun before moving on to a new project.

Pictures from December 2008 of my very own mickey mouse, my little sister. It was one gorgeous winter that year..

Then played a little with pictures from last summer. I miss it. I miss sun. I miss the sight of sunlight cascading down onto people's faces, brighter colours, greener grass, bluer skies, darker shadows, wider smiles and all that. Fuck this gloomy weather it's so depressing. Makes you want to curl up in bed and sleep the dark days away... And then photoshop comes to help and makes the world a little bit nicer place to live. Okay okay.. photographs only. Wish I could brighten, colorize and saturate everything just like that, with a few mouse clicks.

I'm at the point where I think I need to start writing about my work. Dunno maybe it's the after crit effect or something but I do find writing very helpful in terms of developing ideas and talking about them later which is the usual thing at uni. Now.. since I had a crit at uni today and I'm quite excited about this project and also (maybe even a little bit more) about the fact I'm almost finished with uni work for this year I'm posting the final project photos here!

A little extract from the project statement first:

"My aim in this project, that turned out to be a collaboration between me and Lina, was to make this ordinary, rather boyish not-wearing-make-up and definitely-not-doing-posing type of girl to look like the girl from the magazine. The decision was made to take pictures only of her this way also playing with the image of hers. I got really fascinated by the idea the same person can look so different and sometimes even unrecognizable. We did not go to the extremes but the differences are still apparent. With a help of make up, lighting and careful post-production we have managed to accomplish this little challenge of ours. After showing her the final images, Lina said, “It is not me”. However, clearly it is her in the picture, maybe not as a person but surely as a physical being. Make-up and retouching did transform her image but not her self."

Basically we had to choose a strand of photography and do a project on it. I chose beauty. It was just two of us, Lina and me. In addition to being a model and a photographer we also did the make-up, styling, directing, assisting and all the other -ings required. Hours and hours in the studio, hundreds of pictures and many nights spent editing and re-editing photographs. Fun times! Seriously it wasn't easy but definitely well worth it. Not quite sure if this is the direction I want to move forward though but it was for sure an extremely useful experience.

And uhh images are really meant to be shown/viewed printed! Oh well...
